Smoked & Black Smoked & Black is an American Oak top layer bonded on to a multi-plywood base to ensure stability. It comes pre-finished in a sand coloured base with a black stain in the low grain, accentuating the grain and darkening the overall colour. Our Smoked & Black boards are 20mm in total thickness, incorporating a 6mm wear layer of American Oak. Sizes available are: All boards are tongue and grooved on ends and sides. Note: approximately 30% of orders come in random short lengths. Smoking refers to the natural oxidation/ageing process of the oak timber, where the boards are fumed or 'smoked' for three days with ammonia vapour. This vapour chemically reacts with the tannin in the oak and causes it to deepen in colour to a level that the oak would otherwise reach naturally over 20-30 years. The advantage of smoking is that it achieves a natural colour which permeates all the way through the 6 mm wear layer. The smoking also gives the boards an attractive tonal variation from pale to mid tone plus veining within individual boards. These finishes rely on the tonal variance of the smoked base colour to achieve a finish and subtlety that is not possible with other staining processes. |
